By Montague Rhodes James, John Willis Clark
M. R. James (1862-1936) is perhaps most sensible remembered as a author of chilling ghost tales, yet he was once an excellent student of medieval literature and palaeography, who served either as Provost of King's university, Cambridge, and as Director of the Fitzwilliam Museum, and plenty of of his tales replicate his educational historical past. His exact descriptive catalogues of manuscripts owned via faculties, cathedrals and museums are nonetheless of price to students at the present time. James' catalogue of the manuscript holdings of Peterhouse, Cambridge, with an essay at the background of the school library by means of John Willis Clark, was once first released in 1899. Now reissued, it will likely be welcomed by means of librarians and researchers alike.

At Zutphen the lecterns are 9 feet long, and the average number of books in each 17. But this space seemed to me to be excessive when I visited that Library; and if we suppose the books packed rather more closely, it will not be difficult to dispose of the 220 volumes over 12 lecterns. Moreover, we do not know for certain that the number of these was limited to 12. I have merely given a rough estimate, to shew how six lecterns on a side would probably have been arranged in 1418. Further, I have not dealt with the accommodation of the lending library.

The inserted portion has been cleverly made to correspond in style with the older work, but it may be readily detected by the deal lining. Each bookcase is 7 feet 2 inches long, by 2 feet 2 inches broad; and is divided into two compartments by a broad central pilaster. Professor Willis notes that the names of the books were written in the panels of each of these pilasters, but these lists no longer exist.
