1994) as a formal unit within the carbonate platform deposits of the Precordillera. The type section was chosen at Cerro La Silla southeast of Jáchal (Fig. 3), where the lower and the upper boundaries are well exposed. There, the upper part of the La Flecha Formation consists of cyclically arranged dolomites with abundant stromatolites and gypsiferous mudstones. The boundary with the La Silla Formation is marked by 20 cm of dark gray silty dolomite. Above this bed light gray grainstones are present, in which several white dolomitic microbial mounds are developed.
15). They are mainly found above microbial laminites and commonly are erosionally overlain by intraclast conglomerates and oolites at the base of the overlying cycle. Platform configuration. The reconstruction of the platform during the entire Upper Cambrian is hampered by the absence of a distinct platform margin; however, if we look at coeval successions around Laurentia, then some conclusions with respect to platform organization can be drawn. Read (1989) described facies and platform architecture of the Upper Cambrian successions in the Appalachians.
21, see oversized plate at back of volume), where Figure 20. Sequence-stratigraphic interpretation of La Silla Formation. Third-order sequence numbers are those of entire carbonate platform succession. 36 M. Keller only the upper part of the formation is exposed, still show the wackestone and peloidal-grainstone associations. No microbial boundstones or other indicators of an intertidal environment are present there. If this is taken as evidence of a slightly deeper environment, then a ramp-like configuration of the sedimentary environment of the La Silla Formation seems to be a viable alternative.
