In 1936, Doña Zeferina began living with Rosalío Noceda, a local man from Hueyapan. They settled down in Doña Zeferina’s home and she bore him a son whom they named Ernestino. A year later, Don Rosalío died, leaving Doña Zeferina widowed for the second time.

Today, the villagers will write the letter and Maestro Rafael has volunteered to help draft the formal complaint. Back at the house, Rosa helps her mother and aunt wash the luncheon dishes. When they are done, Doña Juana puts up the beans for supper, making enough to feed the family for the next day. She also prepares the nixtamal for tomorrow’s tortillas. Leaving Rosa to take care of Quico, Doña Juana then goes off to a nearby stream to do the laundry. There, she joins a few women she knows well and enjoys a rare moment of gossiping with her friends, out of earshot of her commanding husband and mother-in-law.

Kneeling down at the edge of the stream, the women scrub their families’ soiled clothing, on rocks placed in the water for that purpose, and lay the clean laundry out to dry on the sloping banks behind them. At 3:30, the red and blue bus of the Estrella-Roja line departs in the direction of Tlacotepec, providing transportation to visitors who live along the Hueyapan–Cuautla bus route. Neighbors who live in pueblos within walking distance of the village gather their wares and take off as well, abandoning the plaza to the resident vendors, who slowly pack up their merchandise and make their way home.
